London Stories – Talbot Yard

Hidden behind Borough High Street in Southwark lies Talbot Yard — a forgotten corner of London where Geoffrey Chaucer once imagined the pilgrims of The Canterbury Tales setting out for Canterbury.

Today it’s easy to walk past without noticing it. A narrow cut-through filled with loading bays, graffiti, and the noise of modern London. But seven hundred years ago this was the site of the famous Tabard Inn, one of medieval England’s most important coaching inns and the gathering place for Chaucer’s pilgrims.

In this London Stories episode, I explore the lost world of medieval Southwark, the history of the Tabard Inn, and why The Canterbury Tales still feels so modern today.

London changes constantly — but the people rarely do.
