Welcome to The London Walker Community
Dear subscribers, walkers, explorers, participants, friends, Romans, countrymen, flâneurs and history nerds lend me your ears!
Welcome to the first edition of The London Walker, my first furtive folio! I’m thrilled to have you step along with me as we explore the best of London’s streets, parks and unexpected nooks and cranny’s.
This month, I’ve put together a newsletter with some of the latest:
Upcoming Walks: Exciting routes to inspire your next London jaunt. This is very exciting news, after a year of preparation and research, a Winter/Spring collection of walks has been curated and will be released through this month and into the spring period and kicks off this coming Wednesday, 22 January 10.30am with an exploration of Clerkenwell and Smithfield, seemingly a magical conduit for all sorts of alternative thinkers and dissidents, Rebels and Radicals and a brief history of English activism.

If you’re free and fancy joining me, we’ll be exploring two key areas in the history of social reform: the site of the climactic final day of the Peasants’ Revolt, and the Green where some of the first mass demonstrations of working people were held. Along the way, we’ll encounter an array of wonderful local rebels and radicals. Please come along it would be great to see you!
More to follow with other new walks A Tale of Three Palaces, Around St Paul’s and Arrivals and Assimilation. Keep an eye on the walks page.
Articles and Blogs: In my research its been wonderful to walk through the streets of London and find fascinating stories, and to share them in the blog. There’s so much to see and uncover. Theres no other place quite like it, literally every day, you are discovering something new in London. In the run up before Christmas I thought it suitable to do an examination of some of London’s best pubs, obviously. With over 3,000 in the capital pulling pints its truly hard to find your favourite, but I pluckily picked three of mine out of the barrel, so to speak. Be glad to know your recommendations.

Keep an eye out for a few new articles exploring some fabulous parts of town rich with history. Starting with the story of Whitehall and Banqueting House, from the Anglo Saxons to Henry VIII’s tennis courts, to the astonishing story of Charles I’s execution and the brief period where England was a Republic. In addition we will take a deep dive into the area known as St James’s, a fascinating, evocative place sat between Westminster and Mayfair, it has a deep continued connection with the British aristocracy, government and royalty.
Video homepage on YouTube: Experience London from a fresh perspective with latest short film “January walk through the City”, an arty abstract observational piece, now on a dedicated The London Walker YouTube page. I hope to add more films through the year, both arty as well as some with quirky stories and history. Feel free to have a breeze through and subscribe to see more.

“It felt like the right time to lace up my boots: the desk needed attention, work needed to be done, but I needed to cover some miles, and head into the city, to pace the old thoroughfares. Time to seek out the ancient lost corners, to uncover forgotten stories in old Georgian squares and down by the riverside listen to the currents flow. To search through layers and understand both the now and the then. The train seemed intent on leading me toward low clouds and mist, the parks and suburbs seemed sodden and grey. But as I stepped out from Liverpool Street, the sun broke through the clouds, and suddenly, everything was glorious.”
Happy walking,
The London Walker
