Walk the oldest streets in London. Roman temples, medieval lanes, hidden gardens and the story of St Paul’s rising from the ashes.
This is where London began. Atop Ludgate Hill, the great dome of St Paul’s has commanded the skyline for over three centuries but the story of this corner of the city stretches back far further. Beneath the streets lie the bones of Roman London; in the hidden gardens and narrow lanes, the medieval city is still visible if you know where to look. This is one of the most historically layered walks in London, and one of the most surprising.
From a 3,000 year old Assyrian brick tucked in a churchyard garden to a Roman temple buried beneath a modern office block.
Along the way:
- A hidden garden containing a Bronze Age brick and a piece of Roman pavement
- St Paul’s Cathedral and Temple Bar
- The ancient Roman road of Watling Street and a maze of medieval lanes
- A Roman temple buried underground with a thrilling immersive experience
- Leadenhall and the first coffee house hidden in the alleyways of the city
- Guildhall and the site of London’s Roman amphitheatre, six metres below your feet
- Postman’s Park and its deeply moving Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice
Approximately 2.5 hours Starts: Cafe Nero, EC1A 7HL, outside St Paul’s Underground
