Tucked away in a small Georgian Square, between Lambeth and Kennington, is the childhood home of Charlie Chaplin, one of the most famous figures in film history. It’s little known and not often visited. Behind the doors of Number 39 West Square, a young Charlie Chaplin spent his earliest, happiest years long before Hollywood, global fame, and the Little Tramp.
Born in London in 1889, Chaplin’s childhood in Lambeth shaped everything that followed. Poverty, workhouses, hardship, and resilience all became the emotional heart of his films. His iconic character, the bowler hat, cane, and worn shoes, was inspired by the streets of South London.
