View of the SkyRail from the 02 Greenwich side of the river. Say what you like about this rather silly, ignominious and largely impractical (as well as totally over budget) fairy ride but it does give you some of the most spectacular views of the Thames and its famous bend around the Isle of Dogs and a great view out towards the Thames Barrier and the estuary.
The service comprises a 0.6 mile gondola line that crosses the Thames from the Greenwich Peninsula to the Royal Victoria Dock. Its been in operation, under various names and sponsorships, since 2012. And it offers the most bizarre commuting route you could imagine for London.
Critics have dismissed it as an impractical transport solution, which will appeal to tourists at peak times but is unlikely to attract a large number of cross-river locals or commuters due to its location and the cost of tickets.
However it’s worth the view. I did a job once for Sky TV and we had to go on it multiple times to get footage of people enjoying the ride. I think in one sunny afternoon I rode it about forty times.
